CNY holiday!! (Part 2)

The continuation of my CNY holiday...

3rd day of CNY :

I spent my day at home as mum said that it was a bad day to visit relatives and also friends. This is because on this day , its known as " chek hau"(cantonese) where if you visit others, you and that person will keep arguing all year round.

4th day of CNY :

Spent most day at grandma`s house and as night falls, we went to downtown for CNY`s open house at Campbell Street, Penang.

So many people..wana walk also very hard..

The organizers were very thoughtful. they set up some booths that giving out free foods and drinks for the people.

Open house means got free food and drinks....
Some of the CNY`s tit bits and kuih...Got fried rice and bee hoon

Then, there is this booth where they displayed some stuff from the late 70s ...

Some of the very old old type of flyers..According to my parents, those are the cinema listings on show for the people around in the 70s. its like we looked up on the newspaper for movies and last time, they used to distribute the flyer with sypnosis. So cool...Ancient type of radio and "CD player" Hehe

As we walk further, we came across to this booth where they use red packets to make origamis..

Trishaw man and passanger...Look at those details...
Paper cutting using red packets...
Paper lanterns...

There`s other performances such as singing competition, cultural dances, lion dance that night.

5th day of CNY :

Went to dinner with my cousins and family at Seoul Garden, Gurney Plaza. Finally able to realize my cousin bro`s wish after delaying it for almost 1 year. Hehe...

The food...
and more food....
Soup...
Some part of the mess that we made...

Bill came at around RM 250 for 8 people...not too bad consider the environment and we`re not smelly after the dinner cause from the BBQ smoke...hehe

Its a fun dinner together before my cousin bro went back to Sabah....We`ll go again sometime in the future, ok, J??...=) cheh, as if he reads my blog...Haha...

CNY holiday!! (Part 1)

CNY celebration begin on the 1st day of CNY :

It was a kinda boring day for me. Did nothing except sending mum from temple to another to pray. Then my uncles came over to our house to "pai nian".

Fast forward to the 2nd day of CNY :

Its the day where chinese said "kai nian" (open year) where wedded daughter return home to "pai nian". So, early morning, we get ready to went back to grandma`s house and we ate lunch there. Then, mum and dad fetch grandma to relatives` house and i stayed back to help around in the house.

Then, at night, we went to another "belated reunion dinner" with my paternal family as most of my aunts from KL, Japan as well as Singapore came back. Thus, its sorta family reunion or gathering.

Although we were having dinner at a hotel restaurant, but the service was like a fast food chain. Reason : the hotel restaurant was fully booked and by a certain time, the table that one occupied will need to past to the next customers. *sweat* The food that we`re having :

1st dish: Lou Sang at 19:07 pm
2nd dish : Shark fin soup (but i think its more of "fan si" ) at 19:17 pm
3rd dish : Rebus (boiled?) prawns at 19:20 pm
4th dish : "Hou Si Fatt Choy" (oyster mushroom etc) at 19:30 pm
5th dish: Fish at 19:36 pm
6th dish : Glutinious rice at 19:40 pm
7th dish : Honeydew sago at 19:59pm
8th dish : Fried "nian gao" at 20:03 pm

Basically, we sapu-ed the whole dinner within 1 hour. Superfast!! However, the time for the adults was not enough. So they decided to go to the hotel where my aunts` staying to continue their "grandma"`s story until 11 ++ pm.

CNY reunion dinners....

My CNY celebration began 2days earlier than usual. This is because I had my earlier reunion dinner with my maternal family at my 2nd aunt`s place on the 24th of January which is the 29th lunar calendar.

Had the usual traditional must have dishes like the prawns, chicken, lobak, lotsa veges, mushroom, fishes, soup and rice. Haha..!!!

My grandma is a rather tradition kinda lady as u can see in the picture that we must have our rice in a bowl rather on the plate.

Parts of the dishes

Rice in bowl

Then, on the 25th of Jan (30th of the lunar calendar) which is the important day for the Chinese as it is the actual day for having reunion dinner for family. I had another reunion dinner again with my maternal family and this time, at my grandma`s house.

Dishes was like the day before. Prawns, fishes, chicken and etc....Yummy yummy dinner and we had a lot of fun eating together although it was like another dinner together. Then, help grandma to set up for praying.

Eventful 3days : 15th of February (Part 1)

Continue from previous post, our event for the 2nd day was a trip to Kek Lok Si., which is located nearby our place. Every year, during Chinese New Year period, the temple will be decorated with lots of lightings, and when the night time comes, it changes to a gorgeous and beautiful scene.
A brief introduction about the history of Kek Lok Si:

"The construction of the temple began in 1893 and was inspired by the chief monk of the Goddess of Mercy in Pitt Street. With the support of the consular representative of China in Penang, the project received the sanction of the Manchu Emperor GuangXu, who bestowed a tablet and gift of 70,000 volumes of the Imperial Edition of the Buddhist Sutras.

The primary benefector of the the Kek Lok Si Temple in 1906 was none other than Kapitan Chung Keng Quee.

In 1930, the seven storey main pagoda of the temple or the Pagoda of 10,000 Buddhas, was completed. This pagoda combines a Chinese octagonal base with a middle tier of Thai design, and a Burmese crown; reflecting the temple's embrace of both Mahayana and Theravada Buddhism.

In 2002, a 30.2m bronze statue of the Guan Yin was completed and opened to public. The statue is located on the hillside above the pagoda."

On that day, we leave home to Kek Lok Si at around 6pm. We decided to go there earlier because there will be a huge crowd during night time, and it will not be easy for us to find a car park. We reached there later than an expected 10 minutes. No traffic jam actually, just that someone missed the junction to Kek Lok Si, and went to Air Itam Dam instead. Keke...

We reached the hilltop of the Kek Lok Si at around 6.30pm, and the first view that attracted us was the still-under-construction Guan Yin Temple. The bronze Guan Yin statue was completed in year 2002, and now, the undergoing construction is to build a huge temple that fits the Guan Yin statue. The proposed temple will be around 60 feet tall, and will be surrounded by a thousand of smaller Guan Yin bronze statue. The project is estimated around RM40 million.

The pillar of the huge temple. No less than 60 feet high. And the carvings are so nice!

The cable car station.

There are a few stalls that were selling some merchandise for temple donation purpose. And we saw this 2 lovely micey couple. Ain't they cute? hehe...

Cutie mice.. Hehe..

Stay tuned for part 2, more photos to come! Keke...

Eventful 3days : 14th of February

We had a rather eventful 3days staring from the 14th of Febrauary to 16th of February.

Let us start from the 1st day of the 3days events. As you all know, on the 14th of February is the Valentine`s Day but this year, we chose not to celebrate it cuz for some reasons la. Hehe but the main reason was on that day itself was the Chinese mainly Hokkien people praying the Gof of heaven of known as The Jade Emperor (Tian Gong). It also marked the actual day for the Hokkien people to celebrate their New Year. Some culture lo. =)

Our journey started at ard 9 ish pm.....its hard to look for a parking space unless you wanted to pay RM5 to secure a parking space lor....

Anyway, we manage to look for a parking space which was quite far from our destination and will needed some walking to get there.

This is the main gate to the temple.

And along the roadside to the temple which was located at the peak of the slope, there was this huge groups of beggars asking and waiting for "donation" from the public.

Half way to the temple. Almost there !!!! After some climbing, legs also started to pain d....o.O

Aaaaahhhhh....the final gate to the temple. We`re there !!!!

Before we proceed to the temple to pray, this is the scenery from the peak of the slope... Took some time to reached to the top....

Then, we went to pray but din take any pictures inside...=P

After spending some time (i think ard 2hour ++) inside the temple, we leave the place to cure our grumbling tummy cuz we havent had our dinner !!!

And on our way down from the temple, we spotted this lonely turtle....

With this, we ended our 1 day event and 2 more to go....Stay tune....!!! =)

Loy Krathong in Penang

Yesterday was the Loy Krathong Festival. Its a festival that was widely celebrated throughout Thailand. It is held on the full moon of the 12th month in the traditional Thai Lunar Calendar, in the western calendar this usually falls into Novermber. “Loi” means “to float”. “Krathong” is a raft about a handspan in diameter traditionally made from a section of banana tree trunk , decorated with elaborately-folded banana leaves, flowers, candles, incense sticks etc. During the night of the full moon, many people will release a small raft like this on a river.

We went to the Wat Buppharam in Perak Road to celebrate the fastival and to join in the crowd. Upon arrival at around 8pm, we saw a few stalls selling those "Krathong". There are variety of shapes and sizes to choose from and style too. Apparently, the new style of "Krathong" has evolved from the traditional tree trunk based to Styrofoam based. So, it looked more plastic-ky than the traditional 1.For a small " Krathong" , it cost for RM 10 and the big 1 ranged from RM 20 to RM30.

The varieties of "Krathong" being sell. From Styrofoam to the traditional banana trunk type.

There are a few events that going on at that moment. Some of them are, the singing stage and another part of the temple, there got a few people dancing. Guess not so appropriate. Hehe.

Singing stage.

A guy-girl dancing away ala Thai.

So, we bought 3 "Krathongs" and waited for the parade to begin. I thought the parade going to begun at 9 pm as stated in the newspaper but i was wrong as the main parade only start at 10.30 which is after the chanting from the monks which was scheduled to be start at 9pm. The chanting process only begun at 9.30pm. Talking about punctuality. Cheeshhh.....
The praying altar

People mountain people sea inside the temple waiting for the chanting process.

Our "Krathong".

Some of the "Krathong" inside the temple. If you buy the "Krathong" inside the temple, each 1 cost RM15.

At ard 10.30pm, the parade finally begin. People followed the parade car to Gurney Drive to release their "Krathong" to the sea.But there are certain rules which you can follow. It`s believed by the the Thai people that before you release your "Krathong", its is advisable that you add a snip of your hair or fingernails into the "Krathong" as this is to bring part of your bodies goes out to the Goddess of Water, Phra Mae Khongkha and its to bring bad luck out of your bodies. I dunno how true is that, but we just follow the culture. =)

Lighting up the parade car`s candle. Marking its time to start the parade to Gurney.

Some of the parade cars.

We took a short cut to Gurney as we stop halfway to drive there cuz there`s too many people and we`re in a rush too. =P

T
his is my 2nd time celebrating this Loy Krathong festival but it was my 1st time celebrating in Penang. My 1st time was in Thailand itself.
